The Electoral College is Outdated

Each state possesses a certain number of electors based on population. An elector’s purpose is to listen to the voices of their people; their primary role in elections is to cast a vote that reflects the decisions of their state. Although the system was developed based on population, every state commences with three votes or electors. Many larger states forcefully give their votes to smaller states due to how the system was devised. “Smaller states receive more electoral votes per person than larger states, and it becomes possible to win the presidency by winning just twenty one point eight percent of the American public’s vote” (Richards, 2018, p. 2). This statement enunciates that it is harder to agree on a specific candidate in a larger state due to the higher concentration of people located within that area; it becomes increasingly difficult to reach the needed threshold in selecting a candidate. Also, the formula as to how many electors are assigned to an individual state is flawed since it ultimately benefits the smaller states as indicated in the latter statement.

Promoting a call to action in reforming the current electoral system, the declaration, "This system is simply absurd. It worked in 1789, when the president's power was much more limited and states' powers were comparatively greater. Such a system denied the prospect of one state controlling the entire direction of the nation. But at this juncture, we have - more or less uncontroversially - handed much of that state power to the federal government," speaks to my overall argument because it expresses how the Electoral College fails to promote democracy since the voices of the people are left unheard; sacrificing their efficacy rights to the faithless electors (Osborn, 2017, p. 1).

Together, we comprise ONE nation. Through the words of a common citizen no different than you and I, "I feel strongly that each and every citizen's vote should be weighed equally. Fairness and equality is at the core of what makes us already great as a nation. I am proud to be from a state where a woman's right to vote and its struggle was at our doorstep. I am proud to be from a state that came together after a horrible terrorist attack. I am proud to be from a state that leads in business, education and economics. I would like to also be a proud citizen of a state and country that helped initiate truly free and fair elections in our country," it is viable to make a claim that the electoral system needs a segment on HGTV if you know what I am saying (Gamba, 2016, p. 1).
